High Performance Wireless-N Adapters Deliver Superior Results When Teamed With Routers From The Same Family

A new wireless networking performance standard has been reached that raises the bar on the levels of convenience, range and speed that users have come to expect of Wi-Fi. Not only do the products work at much greater distances, but they help achieve performance levels that allow seamless streaming of video and multi-media applications over wireless networks.

Wireless-N (also known as 802.11n) is the most current generation of wireless standards. It greatly enhances both the range and speed of wireless networks, offering up to four times the range and twelve times the speed of legacy wireless networks 1. Wireless-N sends multiple streams of data along separate paths between the devices to provide improved throughput. Its advanced signal processing helps extend the range of Wireless-N networks well beyond what is typically achieved by Wireless-G (802.11g) or Wireless-B (802.11b) products. Devices built with Wireless-N can also detect 40 MHz channels and automatically make use of them when they are available to boost throughput to performance levels comparable to those of a wired connection. The Linksys Wireless-N Ultra Range Plus, enables users to take advantage of wireless-N technology to wirelessly stream high-definition video, check e-mail from backyard locations, or watch U-Tube videos at greater distances such as a lounge chair by their pool.

Because Wireless-N is optimized for use with WPA2, the strongest and most highly secure encryption scheme available for wireless networks, it helps assure that users can work in confidence, knowing that the data they communicate wirelessly will be protected.

At times, previous wireless technologies left dead spots within homes. Users were either unable to connect to their wireless networks or found themselves communicating at data rates that were too slow to support streaming applications. In some cases, multiple access points were required to assure complete coverage throughout their homes. Wireless-N addresses this problem with greatly improved range that leaves fewer dead spots and nearly eliminates the need for multiple access points.

Wireless-N products are compatible with devices based on the earlier Wireless-G and Wireless-B standards and will interoperate with them. This means that Wireless-N devices can operate at wireless-N speeds and range, while Wireless-G and Wireless-B devices will operate at their respective speeds and range.

For example, a notebook with a Wireless-G adapter that is connected to a Wireless-N router is limited to the range and performance offered by the 802.11g standard. To achieve the high levels of performance available, from a Wireless-N router needs to be used together with another Wireless-N device. Notebooks equipped with Wireless-G or Wireless-B can easily be upgraded with a Wireless-N adapter, such as the Linksys Wireless PC Card (WPC300N) or Wireless-N USB Adapter (WUSB300N) in order to receive full benefit of Wireless-N technology.

The inverse is true as well. Notebooks with Wireless-N adapters need to be connected to a Wireless-N router or gateway for the user to realize their increased range and speed enhancements.

Each new generation of wireless networking brings fundamental changes to the underlying technology that produce improved performance and range. Users will achieve the utmost in wireless range and performance that is currently available when they use Wireless-N adapters together with Wireless-N routers.

Before you head to your local retailer or favorite online store to buy a Wireless-N router, make sure you check to see what wireless technology is in your laptop or computer. If it is an older Wireless-G or Wireless-B, consider also upgrading your notebook or computer with a Wireless-N adapter as well. Matching adapters with your router give you more value from your networking purchase. So remember when it comes to adapters and routers – they work better together.
