Indonesia should develop cars running on natural gas: Fahmi

Antara , Jakarta | Fri, 07/18/2008 5:49 PM | Business

Industry Minister Fahmi Idris on Friday said Indonesia should develop cars that run on compressed natural gas (CNG) to reduce emission.

"All we can support is cars running on CNG. That's the most possible thing to do," he said.

"Developing cars with CNG fuel is faster as we have plenty of fuel while technically it is easier."

Indonesia once tried cars using CNG between the 1980s and 1990s. However, the implementation was not optimal as there was no adequate CNG infrastructure. A number of CNG filling stations in Jakarta had to stop their operations.

"Ideally, public transportation should use CNG as is done in many countries like India," Fahmi said.

He, however, did not rule out the development of electric cars such as those being developed by Japan.

"We can also use electric cars, however, the technology is more complicated," he said.

"The challenge is greater as it is not widely available yet. In car producing countries like Japan, they are still at the prototype stage. It also needs a stable electric supply." (****)
